Fishing License: Don't Forget!

All fishermen 15 years of age and older are required to have a fishing license in the state of Massachusetts (freshwater fishing). If you haven't already, make sure you obtain one soon so that you are prepared for any upcoming outings the club might go on. For most of you (ages 15-17), the license will cost $11.50 and is available to purchase at most tackle shops, sporting good stores, and town halls. For your convenience, the state also makes it possible to purchase/renew licenses online. For more information, visit the Mass Wildlife License Information Page

Winter, Please Leave... I want to go fishing.

The consensus of the club is that we are ready for winter to be over. I'm in agreement. Hopefully in a few more weeks we will be able to grab a van after school and hit some local ponds. Until then, we will just have to deal with whatever Old Man Winter has in store for us.

As a reminder of what we have to look forward to, here is the first of two video clips from this past summer. I was fishing with a friend who also happens to be a moderator of a local school's fishing club. He took the video camera along to capture some of the good fishing we had been enjoying early in the season. We will all be having days likes these before we know it...

February Vacation

February Vacation is less than a week away. It sounds like there will be a bunch of club members doing fishing-related stuff with their time off. I've heard plans of fishing the Swift River, ice-fishing in New Hampshire, and several people are headed to someplace warm for some fishing.
Belize: Are the bonefish really so thick you can catch them off the dock? They are where Sam was fishing.

If you find yourself hanging around home, here are a few suggestions to keep yourself busy:

  • New England Boat Show will be taking place February 14 - 22 at the Boston Convention and Exhibit Center. It is a great venue, and best part is that it can be reached by public transportation. For more information visit the show website: http://naexpo.com/boatshow/flash_hompage.html

  • On Tuesday (Feb 17) night at the Memorial Hall Library in Andover, the film Reel People: Fishermen of Plum Island will be shown and the filmmaker will be on hand to discuss the film and answer questions. The show is free and will start at 7pm. Visit the Memorial Hall Library for details: http://www.mhl.org/about/events/hall/2009/fish_on_2009.htm

  • Get organized for the 2009 season! This is a great time to take inventory of your gear. Give some TLC to those reels, re-stock the tackle box, put new line on reels, tie some flies, etc.

Have a great vacation!

Fly Tying Demo Next Tuesday (2/13)

Our next meeting will take place on Tuesday after school in B228. During the meeting there will be a fly tying demonstration. This will be a great opportunity to learn more about fly fishing and fly tying. All are welcome to attend the meeting.

See you there!
